Testing and legislation

Meeting new legislation and corporate ethics for 2013

The trend is clear. New laws are combining with industry initiatives and corporate concerns about social responsibility to increase demand for in vitro and alternative testing. Examples include the 7th Amendment to the EU Cosmetic Directive (Directive 76/768/EEC) prohibiting animal testing from 2009 with a 2013 deadline, and the EU’s REACH, legislation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals), which will increase the safety assessment of some 140,000 commercial chemicals. In addition, the 3R Initiative (Replace, Reduce and Refine) in the G8 action plan on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development will endorse a more humane approach to academic and industrial research.

On the manufacturing and research front, Biovator’s cooperation partners include AstraZeneca, BASF Corporation, Linköping University, IBL-Hamburg, Medicago, and The Swedish Royal Institute of Technology. Biovator also participates in the IVTIP forum (In Vitro Testing Industrial Platform), which advises European legislators on in vitro testing and alternatives to animal experimentation.
